1. Spend a couple of dollars on a good new suit. It is worth the investment and it is likely you use it in the future and can be reused for multiple interviews with different companies. Do not appear for an interview in casual clothes e.g. jeans, sweats of all kinds, shirts, slippers or sandals. Remember that first impressions are everything as you'll want your prospective employer to see you as the ideal solution for his/her business.
2. Be prepared. Research the company you are interviewing to work for (it will also help you research the job itself, then you know what you are getting into). It is surprising to see how many people in the labor market of today participate in an interview not knowing something about the company. The best way to explain why you want a specific job is to illustrate how the company fits your personal needs and philosophies. It will also be very impressive to your potential employer to show them that you have done your research.
3. Eye contact. Avoiding eye contact shows that you do not have confidence that is needed in every workplace. This is very important.
4. Take notes. Come with a professional folder that has a nice notebook and pen. It shows that you are interested in what the interviewer has to say and that you really care about your possible employment there. It is also a great idea, because if you are called back for a second interview or even a third (and hope you are), you will have a common basis for a conversation between you and the interviewer.
5. Practice! When you were in high school and college, if you did not study for an exam or paper, chances are you will probably will not do well. It is the same in any job interview situation. The more unprepared you are, the more you may not be reminded from the company. There are many books available in the library and the questions on the web that you can practice on. Ask your friend, spouse or child to practice with you and let them read the questions and simulate an interview situation with you.
